September 21, 2019 is World Azheimer’s Day | Home Care Vancouver

September 21st is the 8th annual World Alzheimer’s day. This international campaign, which was first launched in 2012, aims at raising awareness and challenges the stigma and misconceptions surrounding Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia, responsible for causing problems with memory, thinking and behaviour. Symptoms usually develop slowly and gradually get worse over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with everyday tasks.

The impact of World Alzheimer’s Month is increasing every year. However, the stigma and lack of information regarding dementia is still a global problem that requires global action. Many people erroneously still believe that this disease is a normal part of ageing, when it is in fact not. Recent studies have indicated that an average 2 out of 3 people in the world have little or no understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and associated dementia in their countries.

4 Ways to Make a Difference during World Azheimer’s Day | Home Care Vancouver

1. Learn More about Alzheimer’s

Educating yourself about the disease and its impact on an individual and those around you is the first step to making a difference. Too often, people close to Alzheimer’s sufferers pull away after the diagnosis because they do not know what to do or say. We must be mindful that the disease does not rob us of the ones we love. It simply makes it harder for us to reach them. With some basic knowledge, we can begin to understand what those with Alzheimer’s are feeling and what we can do to ease their anxieties and connect with them.

2. Volunteer with a Local Organization

Many non-profit organizations, large and small, rely on the help of volunteers to spread the word, support their cause, and help them keep their organization flowing. The Alzheimer Society of Canada has local chapters in communities all across Canada and so does Alzheimer’s Association. Both organizations can always use help with events, office work, phone calls etc.

3. Spread the Word

Talk to family and friends about dementia and build awareness in your community. You can also get involved in advocacy efforts by becoming a champion for Dementia. By becoming a champion, you can make a positive impact the lives of B.C. residents who have been impacted by Alzheimer’s.

4. Support a Caregiver

Do you know someone who provides care at home for a person living with dementia? Offer to step in and help on September 21 so they can get a break.

For this year’s event, our home care agency in Vancouver challenges everyone to get involved by supporting awareness through contacting the Alzheimer’s associations in their specific countries and more.
