As the winter cold has fallen upon us, many of you may want to escape to warmer destinations.  There are many things one must consider when traveling in order to ensure a healthy and safe trip.

The first priority is having all things medical taken care of.  It is best to consult your physician before leaving on a vacation to discuss the best health measures to take.  You may need to get vaccinated depending on the destination you will be visiting.  In addition, if you take prescribed medications, your doctor will need to provide a note outlining all medications you will be bringing along.  Your doctor will also be able to provide you with valuable advice as to how to ensure optimum health while you are away, especially if you have any medical conditions.  Pack extra medication, syringes, and any other equipment required.  You may even want to wear a medical bracelet while you are away.

Additionally, you want to ensure you have adequate travel insurance.  If there is ever a medical emergency, you want to make sure you get the right medical coverage as well as be able to converse easily with the doctor at hand.  Ask your travel agency or insurance provider the best medical coverage for you on your trip.

Plane rides can be long and strenuous for many seniors.  Deep vein thrombosis can develop, a condition in which blood begins to clot and swelling can arise in the feet and legs.  It is important to drink lots of water on your plane ride and take regular strolls up and down the aisles.  Performing foot and leg exercises can also be helpful when you are seated.  Most significantly, have all your medications packed in your carry-on luggage.

Traveling to a warm destination away from home can be a stressful ordeal, considering all things one must plan ahead of time.  But ensuring you have the right insurance, packing all needed medications and taking the necessary precautions is crucial to having a healthy, and safe trip away.
