5 Ways for Seniors to Stay Healthy as They Age

There is no time like the present to put pep in your step and try something new or different! 1. Games and Mental Health

Geriatric researchers argue that playing games and puzzles with friends and family as past-time activities contribute to optimal mental health. If you have fallen out of a healthy routine, there is no time like the present to pick up the pace. Challenging yourself through regular brain games and puzzles can increase your chances of living a longer and more productive life.

2. Volunteering in the Community

Volunteering is a meaningful way to pass time because it gives you a feeling of accomplishment and is also a good way to give back to the community. 3. Stress Management

Stress is very much part of life regardless of how old you are. Mobility issues may also limit the times in which the senior leaves the house, which in turn also minimizes their ability to socialize.

Despite the limitations noted above, it is important to break down the barriers and find ways to reach out and connect to others. Having an array of people you can turn to for company and support as you age is the best defence mechanism against loneliness, depression, disability, hardship, and loss. The best place to start the search is at the community centre. The local community centre may offer a few recreational programs for seniors at little or no cost.

5. Develop a Sleep Routine

It is a well known fact that you can go on longer without food than without sleep. Seniors need seven to nine hours of sleep per night, but often get much less. Lack of sleep is known to cause depression, irritability, increased fall risk, and memory problems. Recent geriatric studies suggest creating a regular schedule with a simple bedtime routine that is followed through on a daily basis. As well, it is important to keep the bedroom dark and noise-free, which means avoiding television or surfing the internet at least 1 hour before bed.
