If you live in BC, chances are that you may know one or a few of the one million family caregivers that provide care in our province. Caregivers touch all families in some shape or form, whether it is a loved one or outside help providing care. The value of caregivers is highly understated as the extent of the work they do is unprecedented. They dedicate their time and energy toward providing a comfortable and full life for someone who is often coping with a change in health or needs.
The role of a caregiver will become important to all families in some form, over the years, but often it is difficult to predict how or when the situation will arise. Caregivers are extremely important to the family institution and their amazing work should not go unrecognized. This week caregiver associated organizations and community groups will be celebrating BC Family Caregiver Week from May 4 – 10. The aim of the week is to celebrate and thank the countless devoted caregivers across BC.
So take some time this week to recognize, acknowledge and thank the caregivers in your life by perhaps:
- Allowing a few hours of respite for the caregiver to take a break, meet with friends or go for a walk
- Offering to cook a meal for the family or bringing them for meal out
- Writing a thank-you card or sending a bouquet of flowers
- Offering to do grocery shopping for the caregiver
- Gifting them a gift certificate for a spa treatment or dinner out
- And simply just expressing your appreciation for them and that they do
